Family, senior and couple portraits hold cherished memories and add a personal touch to your home decor. To make the most impact, it’s essential to select the right size when displaying them in different areas of your house. Here are a few guidelines to assist you on choosing the best portrait sizes for above the couch, above your bed, on the dining room wall, above the fireplace and to all those in-between wall spaces areas.
Above the Couch
For a family portrait above the couch, aim for a size that complements the width of the seating area. A large portrait that is two-thirds the width of the couch or a wall collage works best. This creates a balanced and visually appealing arrangement.
Above the Bed
When displaying a portrait above your bed, the sizing is a lot like what you used to design above your couch. Balance the portrait to the bed frame and wall space to make it look like it fits in.
Above the Fireplace
Balance the portrait's size with the fireplace opening and surrounding area. Many times a mantel will be included to accent the space and provide an easy visual for sizing your portraits. I prefer the portraits that hang above the mantel. However, it is definitely your personal preference and how you feel the space will be most appealing to showcase your senior, couple and family memories.
Dining Room Wall
In the dining room, the family portrait should enhance the ambiance during meals without overwhelming the space. Consider a portrait size that fits comfortably above the dining table. For a rectangular dining table, a portrait that matches its width or slightly narrower is a good choice. Ensure the portrait is positioned comfortably so it becomes a focal point during family gatherings.
In-between Wall Space Areas
The wall space behind a chair or above a decorative table provides a unique opportunity to display a portrait or collage as a central element. The artwork should compliment the existing elements and contribute to the overall theme. Although all areas benefit, these are the areas that I find are most helpful to visualize when designing. I can help you do that using my program that takes your room and then sizes it. I can then add your favorite portraits with your favorite frames to design a visually appealing space that coordinates with your decor as well as fills you with joyful memories.
Selecting the right family portrait size for different spaces in your home can significantly impact the overall aesthetics and ambiance. Above the couch, opt for a portrait that complements the couch’s width, above the fireplace, look for natural spacing above the mantel, while in the dining room, choose a size that fits comfortably above the dining table. Above the fireplace, balance the portrait’s size with the fireplace opening, and for those open wall spaces, go for a portrait that fits the width while creating an engaging display.

Darlene - These are beautiful! I love all the frames and ideas. I am a huge fan of statement pieces - they look amazing! The ones in the bedroom look like they are looking through a window :)
